Apple is taking its battle with Epic Games over app store fees to the Supreme Court. The tech giant is seeking to overturn a contempt ruling that could prevent it from charging high commission fees when developers redirect iPhone users to alternative payment methods. This case stems from Epic's accusation that Apple violated a judicial order mandating changes to its App Store.
Background of the App Store Dispute
In the ongoing dispute, Apple has faced criticism for imposing a 30 percent commission on developers using its payment methods. Epic Games contends that this commission is excessive and detrimental to developers. In December, the 9th Circuit Court upheld a ruling that Apple had violated the spirit of the judicial order by charging fees that were deemed prohibitive for developers.
The judicial order required Apple to allow developers to include links directing users to external payment options. However, Apple implemented this change by instituting a 27 percent commission on such link-outs, which Epic argues still places a burden on developers.
