Ann Widdecombe, a prominent figure in British politics and a reality TV star, died at the age of 78 on July 10, 2026. Widdecombe, known for her outspoken views and strong support for Brexit, gained fame as a contestant on Strictly Come Dancing in 2010, shortly after her departure from Parliament.
Political Career and Controversies
Born in Bath, Somerset, in 1947, Widdecombe studied at Birmingham University and Oxford University before entering politics. She served as the Member of Parliament for Maidstone from 1987 until 2010. Throughout her career, she was recognized for her staunch conservative views, opposing issues such as abortion and gay rights. Widdecombe was critical of David Cameron's legalization of gay marriage, stating in 2019 that science might one day provide an answer to being gay.
Her political journey included serving as a junior social security minister and later as prisons minister, where she controversially defended the chaining of pregnant prisoners. Despite the challenges, she remained a vocal critic of her party, notably referring to Michael Howard as having "something of the night about him."
Reality TV Fame and Public Persona
After leaving Parliament, Widdecombe's appearance on Strictly Come Dancing in 2010 marked the beginning of her entertainment career. Describing her dancing as "galumphing," she reached the ninth week of the competition, much to the audience's delight. She also participated in Celebrity Big Brother and performed in pantomime as the Evil Queen in Snow White.
