Andy Burnham will need to secure an additional £4.7 billion for defence in his first budget after Keir Starmer announced a £298 billion defence investment plan on Tuesday. Sources close to Burnham indicate that he will not renegotiate the plan, which lacks clear funding sources.
Details of the Defence Investment Plan
The defence investment plan includes significant allocations, such as £47 billion for new nuclear submarines, including the Dreadnought replacement for the Trident submarines, and the new Aukus attack submarine project in collaboration with Australia and the US.
Other financial commitments include £13 billion for a new nuclear warhead and £1.7 billion for nuclear fuels. An additional £1 billion is earmarked for 12 Lockheed Martin F-35A jets, which are set to be delivered after 2030.
Future Investments in Defence Technology
Moreover, the plan allocates £8.6 billion to develop the Gcap next-generation fighter aircraft in a joint initiative with Italy and Japan. There is also an extra £1.1 billion to maintain existing Typhoon jets until the 2040s.
