Amazon has announced it will cease releasing new Fire Stick models that support sideloading apps, attributing this decision to the increasing threat of malware. The announcement came following the launch of two new models running on its proprietary operating system, Vega OS, which does not allow sideloading from outside its Appstore.
Transition from Fire OS to Vega OS
Historically, previous Fire Sticks operated on Fire OS, an Android-based system. The shift to Vega OS marks a significant change, as this new system eliminates the ability to sideload apps. This change is not unexpected, given that many users had utilized sideloading to access additional functionalities, particularly from the Google Play Store.
However, Amazon's move reflects a growing concern regarding the association of sideloading with streaming piracy, especially in relation to sporting events. The company aims to protect its users from potential malware threats linked to these unauthorized applications.
