Alyssa Thomas, a forward for the Phoenix Mercury, publicly criticized the WNBA on Monday after revealing she received death threats and racial slurs following her one-game suspension. The incident stemmed from a play during a recent game against Indiana, where Thomas accidentally hit Caitlin Clark in the throat.
Impact of the Incident on Player Safety
Thomas expressed her outrage towards WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert for her silence regarding player safety. In her statement, she emphasized that the contact with Clark was a “complete accident” and described the aftermath as “unfortunate.”
The backlash against Thomas has raised concerns about the treatment of players in the league, particularly regarding the threats made against her. Thomas stated, “It’s disappointing to see how quickly people can turn to hate and violence.”
