AI drafting tools are altering the meaning of users' posts on sensitive topics like abortion and climate change, according to a study from Oxford and Potsdam universities. Researchers found that these tools often inject political biases, potentially influencing long-term public opinion.
AI Tools and Political Biases
As tech companies promote AI tools for redrafting and summarizing content, the study reveals a worrying trend: many of these tools exhibit distinct political leanings. For instance, AI models from Meta, Google, and Alibaba frequently altered posts to reflect a more liberal viewpoint, especially on issues like feminism and gun control.
Conversely, the AI tool Grok, developed by xAI, displayed a conservative bias, often aligning with pro-life perspectives when interpreting posts about abortion. This divergence in AI behavior raises questions about the implications for free speech and public discourse.
Impact on Public Opinion
The researchers emphasized that even minor changes made by AI can amplify biases across millions of interactions. This could lead to significant shifts in public opinion, effectively “polluting the forest” of genuine human expression, as noted by co-author Prof. Sandra Wachter.
