On Friday in Cape Verde, an investigation by Which? Travel revealed that AI-generated summaries of Tripadvisor hotel reviews often downplay serious complaints. The findings highlighted how these overviews can mislead potential travelers regarding hygiene and safety at various hotels.
Concerns Over AI-Generated Reviews
The AI summaries on Tripadvisor's hotel pages were found to gloss over significant issues, such as allegations of sexual harassment and hygiene complaints. For instance, the Riu Palace Santa Maria was described as 'spotless', despite guests reporting raw chicken and unsanitary conditions, even sharing images of dead mice near the buffet.
Rory Boland, editor of Which? Travel, emphasized the importance of scrutinizing guest reviews rather than relying solely on AI summaries. He stated, “Users should scroll past these summaries and look at guest reviews, particularly one-star ratings.” This recommendation comes in light of the hotel chain facing lawsuits for poor hygiene linked to mass food poisoning incidents.
Tripadvisor's Response to Criticism
In response to the investigation, Tripadvisor acknowledged the need for ongoing monitoring and refinement of its AI tool. The company expressed confidence that the AI features serve their intended purpose, which is to help travelers quickly grasp the breadth of feedback while facilitating easy access to the underlying reviews.
