On Friday, a report by Tech Against Terrorism revealed that extremist groups, including al-Qaida, are increasingly using AI tools to plan terror attacks. The report highlights a significant rise in incidents where such groups leverage AI for operational purposes, a shift from their previous focus on propaganda.
AI's Use in Terrorism Planning
The report analyzed over 2,300 requests sent to 27 AI models, finding that 32% of queries resulted in usable information for would-be extremists. This figure increased to 42% when questions were framed for research purposes. Experts warn that this trend marks a dangerous evolution in how terrorists utilize technology.
Historically, groups like the Islamic State have mainly employed AI for creating propaganda materials, such as videos and memes. However, a December analysis from Militant Wire noted that the year 2025 has seen a notable increase in terrorists using AI for planning attacks. This includes the generation of detailed attack strategies and surveillance methods.
Examples of AI Utilization by Extremists
Reports indicate that AI tools were used in several high-profile attacks across various countries, including the United States, Canada, Israel, and France. For instance, a suspect in a California arson case utilized ChatGPT to generate images of burning cities and inquire about legal responsibilities.
