The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has rejected a proposal to expand the Africa Cup of Nations from 24 to 28 teams. The decision was confirmed by an executive committee member, who described the idea as a ‘very bad idea’. The proposal was initially presented by CAF president Patrice Motsepe during a press conference held in February in Dar-es-Salaam, Tanzania.
Reasons Behind the Rejection
The rejection of the expansion plan stems from CAF's commitment to enhancing the tournament's quality. The organization aims to maintain a world-class standard for the Africa Cup of Nations, which is a prestigious event in African football. By keeping the number of teams at 24, CAF believes it can ensure a higher level of competition and better overall performance.
Executive committee members expressed concerns that expanding the tournament could dilute the quality of play. Maintaining the current format allows for more rigorous selection and competition among the participating teams, which is crucial for the tournament's integrity.
