A Happy Family, the feature debut of Swiss director Jan-Eric Mack, premiered on July 4, 2023, at the 60th Karlovy Vary International Film Festival (KVIFF). This social drama offers a fresh perspective on Switzerland, highlighting the struggles of single mothers facing poverty and social inequality. The film's complex narrative and unexpected thriller elements aim to engage audiences deeply.
Exploring Poverty Through a Complex Narrative
The story follows Niki, a single mother of two who juggles multiple jobs but still finds herself in dire financial straits. After a devastating fire destroys their home, her children are placed in foster care, prompting Niki to assume a new identity to remain close to them. This layered plot not only addresses poverty but also the systemic issues that affect families in Switzerland.
Mack co-wrote the film with Anna Schinz, Nikita Afanasjew, and Eva Kienholz. Schinz stars as Niki, supported by a talented cast including Julia Jentsch and Bettina Stucky. The film's production involved multiple collaborators, including C-Films AG and DCM Film Distribution.
A Unique Approach to Swiss Cinema
A Happy Family stands out as the first Swiss film featured in KVIFF's prestigious Crystal Globe Competition. Mack's approach blends genres, incorporating thriller elements and humor into a narrative that typically would be strictly a social drama. This genre-mixing aims to surprise viewers and provoke thought about the characters' moral complexities.
