A monumental statue of Lionel Messi, the renowned Argentine soccer player, was unveiled in Cutral Có, Patagonia, on Friday. Standing at 85 feet tall and weighing 70 tons, this impressive tribute cost $130,000 to create. Artist Aldo Beroisa dedicated over a year to this project, which reflects the fervor surrounding the World Cup.
Details of the Monumental Statue
The statue is designed to capture Messi's likeness and has been described by the town's mayor as their “Sistine Chapel.” The mayor noted, “You can manage to convey what Christ looked like, or in the Last Supper—what the apostles looked like is open to interpretation. But with this one, you can’t make a mistake. Messi is Messi.”
Despite facing numerous challenges, including the fierce winds of Patagonia, Beroisa remained committed to ensuring the statue accurately represented Messi’s recognizable face. He stated, “All the public opinion’s eyes are going to be on the face. If I don’t get the face right, everything I built falls apart.”
