As of now, Earth is home to over 15,000 satellites, with around 10,000 belonging to Elon Musk's SpaceX. The rapid increase in satellite numbers poses significant challenges for space debris management. On Friday, experts discussed potential methods for cleaning up the growing space junk problem, which has reached a staggering 13,000 tons.
Understanding the Space Junk Crisis
The accumulation of space debris has become a pressing issue for both current and future space missions. Space debris includes defunct satellites, spent rocket stages, and fragments from collisions. This clutter poses risks to operational satellites and the International Space Station.
According to experts, the projected launch of 1 million more satellites by Musk could exacerbate the situation unless effective cleanup strategies are implemented.
