An 11-year-old boy in Canada tragically died from rabies after being awoken by a bat on his face while visiting a cottage in Ontario in 2024. According to a report published by the Canadian Medical Association Journal, the boy swatted the bat away, and his father later released it outside, not realizing the potential danger.
Initial Symptoms and Medical Response
The boy's parents did not seek immediate medical attention, as he had no visible injuries and the bat did not appear to be acting erratically. However, 19 days later, he began to experience numbness and swelling in his face, prompting his family to seek emergency medical care.
At first, an emergency clinic prescribed antiviral medication for what they suspected might be Bell's palsy, a temporary facial paralysis. As the boy's condition deteriorated, he was misdiagnosed several times, initially being treated for herpes gingivostomatitis, a viral infection of the mouth.
Rapid Deterioration and Diagnosis
After returning to the hospital with worsening symptoms, including fever, confusion, and hallucinations, he was intubated and admitted to the pediatric intensive care unit. Doctors at the University of Manitoba strongly suspected rabies, and tests later confirmed the diagnosis.
